Fish Have More Sense

This past weekend, me and the boys went fishing with their Grandma Nancy, who is also my Mom. We brought out once again our Zebco 202 and the pair of homemade bamboo poles the boys had made. We went out into one of the channels near our home that lead to Mason's Inlet. I had hoped we could get closer to the actual inlet but we had gone out at low tide.

Lately for some reason Grandma Nancy has been on this kick about getting me to run the boat out of the marina. The boys laughed though when I got up out to the intracoastal waterway and then promptly took an early right. We ran right up on a shoal and the outboard motor kicked up as it plowed the muddy bottom. I guess it's a good thing I never went into the Navy or Coast Guard.

The most important thing when taking a fishing trip in a boat is to make sure that you have enough life jackets and that any children under the age of 13 have theirs on at all times. It would have been a miserable day to end up in the water. We headed out at around 8 am and the temperature was barely out of the 30s with a stiff wind coming at us from the East.

Now we must be a sight going from trip to trip with our Bamboo poles, but the boys get an additional pin toward their Cub Scout Fishing Pins if they catch a fish with them. So we kept the lines in the water the entire trip off of these homemade monsters while Caleb and Colby, my sons took turns trying to cast out with the Zebco 202 Spincast reel and rod or Grandma Nancy's Spin Reel and Rod. Colby used the Spin Reel mostly and some how managed to get the thing to backlash and snarl. I didn't think that was quite possible.

Caleb mainly used the Spincast and a couple of times whipped it right across my face. Every time he cast I decided it would be a good idea to hide my face in the hood of my jacket. While the boys used the mechanical rods I just kept an eye on the bamboo poles. To me they are still pretty cool and I hope the boys contraptions actually hook something.

After about 2 hours we headed back in and loaded up the car. Colby had a big question...when are we going to go fishing again? I hope it will be soon. Though you can get the Cub Scout Fishing Pin without catching a fish it would be more fun if the boys did. We'll try it out some more around our home in Wilmington NC and then in December we hope to go fishing at Lake Waccamaw State Park. There are a lot fresh water fish species supposedly in that lake and hopefully they wear winter coats :)

In any case it seems most of the fish have more sense than we do, that or they all went out toward the inlets and the ocean. But we'll keep trying.
